Flange, oil and gas, petrochemical and pressure equipment
ASTM A193 Grade B7 is an alloy-steel bolting grade used for pressure vessels, valves, flanges, fittings and other high-temperature, high-pressure or special-purpose service covered by the purchase specification. This product is supplied as a full-thread stud with two ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts when that combination is specified.
Coating and lubrication change thread fit and the torque-tension relationship. They must be agreed together with the mating nuts and the approved assembly procedure.
The drawing distinguishes end-to-end length L from effective thread length B (thread-to-thread). Thread-to-thread is not thread pitch. Both ends are flat chamfered ends, not conical points.
Confirm diameter, pitch or threads per inch, thread tolerance, chamfer, coating allowance and nut engagement on the approved manufacturing drawing.
Typical applications include bolted flanges, valves, fittings and pressure-equipment joints where the project calls for ASTM A193 B7. Suitability depends on the full joint design, operating temperature and pressure, corrosion exposure, coating system and assembly procedure.
For wet, marine, chemical or otherwise corrosive exposure, do not assume bare B7 is adequate. The project engineer must select a compatible coating, material alternative or corrosion-control system.
