Corrosive flange, marine, chemical and industrial service
ASTM A193 Grade B8M is stainless-steel bolting based on Type 316 stainless steel. ASTM A193 includes B8 and B8M grades; B8 is based on Type 304 stainless steel, while B8M is based on Type 316 stainless steel. The required class and condition must be stated because Class 1 and Class 2 are not interchangeable descriptions.
Stainless appearance alone does not prove grade or condition. Procurement should rely on the specified standard, traceability and required inspection documents.
The drawing shows a full-thread stud with flat chamfered ends. L is end-to-end length; B is effective thread length measured thread-to-thread. B is not thread pitch.
Confirm thread series, tolerance, chamfer, class/condition and mating-nut engagement on the approved drawing and purchase order.
B8M is selected where Type 316 stainless steel is specified for the bolting system. Actual suitability depends on chloride level, temperature, crevice conditions, mating materials and cleaning or maintenance regime.
Type 316 stainless steel is not automatically suitable for every marine, chemical or high-temperature environment. The project material specification remains controlling.
